Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch app can help you choose ocean-friendly fish

The news about the health of the oceans is grim.
According to a recent New York Times editorial, the oceans are “approaching irreversible, potentially catastrophic change.” Seven commercially important species of fish, including mackerel, marlin, and three types of tuna, are endangered, some critically so.
In light of these dire warnings, it’s important to be conscious of our fish and seafood choices. And the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch app offers can help you do that.
The app, which is available for the iPhone and Android, provides recommendations for ocean-friendly fish, including a list of “super green” seafood that is low in contaminants, high in omega-3s, and not harmful to the ocean ecosystem. It allows you to sort by “best choice,” “good alternative,” and “avoid” rankings, and lets you search by sushi names. A new feature, Project Fish Map helps you find restaurants and stores which offer ocean-friendly seafood.
If you don’t use one of these phones, you can print a regional pocket guide to keep in your wallet. Seafood Watch offers regional guides to ocean-friendly fish so you can make good choices wherever you live or travel.
